Freud, 31-40

According to Freud, it is societies goal to control and restrain our aggression. Everyone has a “super ego,” also known as the conscience. The conscience is like the little voice in our heads telling us what to do and gives us a sense of guilt. This is true because whenever we do something that we know we shouldn’t be doing, there is always that feeling of guilt or awareness that what we are doing is bad. Our conscience regulates our thoughts and not only do we have to answer to a higher authority when we commit something bad, but we also have to deal with the guilt within ourselves which is also another form of punishment . According to Freud, the two main sources of guilt include the fear of authority and the fear of of our super ego. Civilization reinforces the sense of guilt to control man.
